Mangrove Forest Usability To Humans
As an archipelago, Indonesia is one country with an area of mangrove forest in the world. Mangrove forests have an important role and benefits that many either directly or indirectly to the surrounding environment, especially for coastal residents. In general, mangrove forests or mangrove has the definition as forests growing on swamps brackish water located on the coastline and affected by tidal sea water precisely in the beach area and around the mouth of the river, so the plants that live in the mangrove forest is unique because it is a combination of characteristics of plants that live on land and at sea. Here are some of the benefits and role of Mangrove Forests:
1. Preventing Sea Water Intrusion
A sea intrusion events saline water intrusion into the mainland. Sea intrusion can cause ground water becomes brackish so it is not good to eat. Mangrove forests have a function to precipitate the mud in the roots of mangrove trees so as to prevent sea water intrusion into the mainland.
2. Preventing Beach Erosion and Abrasion
Erosion is the erosion of the soil surface by the flow of water while abrasion is an erosion of the soil surface as a result of the pounding waves of the sea. Mangrove forests have roots that are efficient in protecting the soil in coastal areas, so it can be protective soil erosion due to water.
3. As a deterrent and naturally filter
Mangrove forests are usually filled with the roots of the mangrove trees and muddy. The roots can accelerate the decomposition of organic waste that is brought into the territory pantai.Selain decomposing organic waste, mangrove forests can also help speed up the process of decomposition of chemicals that pollute the ocean such as oil and detergent, and a natural enghalang against strong sea breeze in certain seasons.
4. As a place to live and food source for several species
Mangrove forests are also a suitable shelter for many animals such as lizards, turtles, monkeys, birds, snakes, and others. Some types of marine animals such as fish, shrimp, crabs and snails are also many live in this area. The roots of mangrove trees stick giving nutrients and become a nursery area for fish and invertebrate animals that live in the vicinity. Fish and shrimp caught in the sea and in the coral before adults need protection from predators and a sufficient supply of nutrients in this mangrove area. Various types of land animals shelter or stop by perch and forage in mangrove habitat.
5. Role in the formation of the island and stabilizing coastal areas
Mangrove forests are often said to be forming the mainland because of sediment and soil withheld foster the development of the coastline from time to time. Mangrove expand the limits of the beach and provide an opportunity for terrestrial plants live and grow in the mainland. For example, water- borne fruit vivipar will settle at the bottom of a shallow, can develop and become a collection of mangrove in the new habitat. In a long period of time this new habitat can be expanded into its own island.
Mangrove forests in Indonesia is not immune from environmental problems. Due to poor management, mangrove forest ecosystems in coastal areas endangered so it will accelerate the process of coastal erosion and in a few years, the shoreline will be faster shift to inland in Neighborhoods Aceh. In the face of this, WWF Indonesia fundraising for mangrove forest restoration project titled Save Mangrove #BirukanLaut. By donating some of the money, people can directly contribute to the planting and care of the mangrove areas. Moreover, with the holding of this crowdfunding will indirectly bring awareness to the public the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems, including mangrove vegetation.
